Lying in the mountainous region of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is often called the “Rose of the North”. Ancient temples dripping in history, towering mountains and indigenous hill tribe culture might have something to do with it. This is an area of Thailand that gets into your heart. To get you started on your trip here, these are ten of the best things to do in Chiang Mai.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, perched on a mountain overlooking the city, is a rite of passage for anyone visiting Chiang Mai. This sacred site has breathtaking views over the valley below and gives you an opportunity to experience the atmosphere of one of Thailand’s most important temples. In the city centre you’ll find Wat Chedi Luang, famous for its majestic, partially ruined chedi that dates back to the 14th century. The Old City of Chiang Mai, enclosed by ancient walls and a moat, is a bustling area just asking to be explored by foot. 3. Visit the Elephant Nature Park

ELEPHANT-PARK-NEW

The Elephant Nature Park sanctuary, located just outside Chiang Mai, is one of the pioneers of the ethical treatment of elephants. Gone are the days of elephant riding as a bucket-list activity – now it’s seen as a cruel activity that exploits these gentle giants (although many places do still offer elephant rides – we advise avoiding these at all costs). Now, elephant sanctuaries are more popular than ever, rescuing elephants from lives of harsh captivity and providing them sanctuaries across Thailand. Here, your money goes towards supporting the rescue of elephants and their protection, turning the tide on what was once a cruel industry. Elephant Nature Park offers various ways of learning about and experiencing the beauty of these creatures – with no bathing in sight. Instead, you can observe from platforms these creatures – once chained up and malnourished – living a life of freedom in the park.

4. Experience the Night Bazaar

Chiang Mai’s Night Bazaar is one of the most buzzing markets to visit in Thailand. Located along Chang Klan Road, you’ll find everything from handmade jewellery and textiles to artwork, antiques, knock-off brands and tacky souvenirs. It’s one of the best places in the city to try local street food and enjoy some classic Thai entertainment – think kathoeys cabarets, karaoke and live music bands. It’s a feast for the senses.

5. Explore the Doi Inthanon National Park

Exploring this breathtaking park brings you face to face with waterfalls, lush forests and a network of hiking trails that take you into the heart of this landscape. FAH LANNA SPA

A traditional Thai massage or spa treatment is a perfect way to unwind after a day of temple hopping, and few places do spa days better than Chiang Mai. Many spas in the city offer everything from relaxing massages to facials and pedicures, but few match the beauty and atmosphere of Fah Lanna Spa. Here you’ll find an achingly beautiful oasis in Chiang Mai’s Old City, with pagoda treatment rooms surrounding a central pond lined with palm trees and a wooden boardwalk. Their signature Wisdom package includes a traditional Lanna Wai Kru ceremony, herbal steam detox and a Betel leaf skin detox.

7. Take a Thai Cooking Class

THAI FARM COOKING SCHOOL

Immerse yourself in the heart of Thai culture by taking a cooking class. Chiang Mai is perhaps the best place in Thailand to learn how to cook this world-famous cuisine. Visit local markets and learn how to prepare authentic Thai dishes from scratch. Popular classes include Thai Farm Cooking School and Cooking with Poo, where you can learn the secrets of Thai cuisine from experienced chefs, and enjoy a delicious meal you’ve prepared yourself.

Many people visit Chiang Mai for the markets alone, with all having unique and beautiful crafts that you won’t find anywhere else.

GRAND CANYON WATERPARK

Known locally as Hang Dong Canyon, this little gem is off the usual tourist radar, but is so much fun! Now, it’s a rip-roaring water park that’s perfect for cooling off from the sticky Thai heat. They have everything from inflatable obstacle courses and ziplining to wakeboarding and giant slides.
