The Golden Triangle, named so because it’s where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet, was once infamous as the heart of opium and drug-trafficking. Today, it’s a long way from its seedy past, and is now a popular tourist destination in its own right. It’s a place where you can witness the mighty Mekong river snaking its way through the lush rainforest, as you gaze upon the mountains that straddle Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. It’s one of the main reasons that people make the trek up to Chaing Rai, and with good reason. Here’s our guide on how to visit the Golden Triangle in Chiang Rai, with everything you need to know to make the most of your visit to this historical crossroads.

How to Get to the Golden Triangle

Golden Triangle Chiang Mai, Thailand

The Golden Triangle is around 70km north of Chiang Rai city. You can reach it by car, scooter or by joining one of the many tours available from Chiang Rai. The journey takes about 1.5 hours by car, with beautiful views over the Northern Thai countryside. It’s also possible to hire a driver for the day, who can take you to the Golden Triangle, to nearby attractions and then bring you back to Chiang Rai when you’re ready at the end of the day. If you prefer to take public transport, it’s important to note that no public transport goes direct from Chiang Rai to The Golden Triangle. Catch a bus from Chiang Rai to Mae Chan, and then get a taxi to the Golden Triangle. It’s worth noting that most people visit the Golden Triangle as part of a tour, whether as a group or private.

Begin with the Golden Triangle Park

Golden Triangle at Mekong River, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand

The heart of the region is the Golden Triangle Park, which is the best way to start any visit here. This is the spot to witness the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers as they snake their way through the mountains and farmland. The viewpoint here has breathtaking panoramic views of the three countries – Thailand, Laos and Myanmar – as well as a golden Buddha statue and a sign marking the Golden Triangle. Getting here as early as you can will allow you to see the landscape bathed in soft, golden light. A truly magical experience.

Visit the Hall of Opium

The Hall of Opium at the Golden Triangle Park, Chiang Rai

A short drive from the viewpoint is the Hall of Opium Museum, an essential stop to understand the historical significance of the Golden Triangle. The museum exhibits give visitors a comprehensive history of the opium trade, from its origins to its impact on the region. The exhibits are well-curated, featuring interactive displays and artefacts. Spend a couple of hours here to gain a thorough understanding of how the opium trade shaped the area and its people. Entrance fee is 200 THB.

Where to Eat at the Golden Triangle

Sop Ruak is the village at the heart of the Golden Triangle, where the Ruak and Mekong rivers converge. After your museum visit, head to the nearby market in the village. It’s catered towards the tourists that visit the triangle, and is a good place to grab any souvenirs and wander around the bustling streets. For lunch, choose one of the many riverside restaurants that line the banks, serving up traditional Thai cuisine. Tucked away at the northern end of the village, we loved Sriwan Coffee & Restaurant, serving up authentic, home cooked Northern Thai food with wonderful views over the river. Try the hearty hot pots, grilled fish and bold, spicy salads.

Boat Ride on the Mekong River

BOATS ON MEKONG RIVER

One of the highlights of visiting the Golden Triangle is a boat ride on the Mekong River. You’ll find several companies in town offering to take you along the river, with varying lengths and tour options available. It’s an unforgettable way to experience the landscape here, with the lush jungle and farmland surrounding you as you float past on a traditional long-tail boat. Some tours include a stop at a small island called Don Sao. Technically part of Laos, you don’t need a passport or visa to disembark here, and you can say you’ve officially stepped foot on Laos. We think the island is a little underwhelming, but it is a chance to see Harry Potter-like pickled animals in jars and other unique Laotian products for sale! Boat tours cost approximately 1000 THB for an hour’s trip.

Visit the Ancient City of Chiang Saen

After experiencing the Golden Triangle Park and Sop Ruak village, make your way to the ancient city of Chiang Saen, just a short drive from the Golden Triangle. Chiang Saen is one of the oldest towns in Thailand, with a history dating back to the 7th century. The town is home to ancient temples, ruins and old city walls. Visit the Wat Phra That Chedi Luang, a famous and significant temple with a chedi that you can climb to the top of, giving you beautiful views of the town and countryside. If you have time, visit the Chiang Saen National Museum, with exhibits that include ancient sculptures, pottery and relics from the opium trade era. Round off your visit to Chiang Saen with a stop at Wat Pa Sak, our favourite hidden gem. It’s an old temple nestled into a peaceful forest and with serious Angkor Wat vibes.

Sunset at Wat Phra That Doi Wao

End your day with a visit to Wat Phra That Doi Wao, a beautiful temple on a hillside that overlooks the Golden Triangle. Watch sunset over a backdrop of the Mekong river and jungle-clad mountains. You can head for dinner at one of the riverside restaurants or a local eatery in Chiang Saen town. The area is also home to guesthouses and luxury resorts, if you want to extend your stay.
